Editing is a broad term that involves making enhancements/changes to the appearance of an image. Some of the simple photo-editing techniques include:

Noise reduction: smoothing the original photo
White balance: playing with the color of the light in the image
Contrast: higher contrast makes an image more punchy, while lower contrast makes it flatter in color
Exposure: the brightness of the photo
Lens correction: addressing any issues with the camera lens using a software
Color adjustments: change the color of an item or element in the photo
Resizing & cropping: adjust the dimensions(width and height) of the image
Background removal: delete unwanted background from the image, focusing on the subject
