Boycott Chinese Products

Boycott Chinese Products

Boycott Chinese Products (Boycott Made in China or stop buying Chinese goods) is a slogan to advocate a boycott of Chinese-made products. China is the largest country in the world by population, and the third-largest by territory, sharing long borders with several nations like India, Russia, Myanmar, and others.

Commonly cited reasons for the boycott are alleged low quality of products, human rights issues, territorial conflicts, support for separatist movements within China, and objection to more specific matters relating to China, such as the eating of dog meat and the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, and more recently, the government’s alleged mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why Boycott Chinese Products?

1. Human Rights violations  within Mainland China and in other occupied or controlled nations such as Tibet, Mongolia, Uyghur & Vietnam.

2. Low Work wages  Labor is abundant and cheap in China because of one billion+ people living at the poverty level. At any one time, there are an estimated hundred million workers who are unemployed and underemployed. China doesn’t even provide workman’s compensation insurance for their workers, i.e if a worker gets hurt on the job, he/she won’t receive any compensation to the point that they are disabled.

3. No environmental rules — the Chinese government imposes very few health, safety, or environmental regulations and these protection laws are generally ignored and not enforced, especially at the local level. Thus, Chinese companies can dump any byproduct into the air or water.

4. Manipulates its currency — China undervalues its currency by an estimated 30%-40%, which makes every product that China ships out 30-40% cheaper than those of a potential American/Global competitor.

How boycotting Chinese products help?

If all countries of the world stop importing from China, and China retaliates back in stopping imports as well, the first thing that will be affected will be the world economy for a short period.

Now, as Chinese products have nowhere to go, it will simply flood the markets. According to the law of supply and demand, when demand is low but the supply is high, prices are going to fall to attract potential buyers. China will go through a period of price adjustments, beginning by printing a lot of RMB (Ren Min Bi: the official currency of China) to match a sudden glut of goods to prevent deflation, then put the money in the hands of the poorest population.

However, if this situation is to take place, many industries and countries that relied on trade with China will collapse since aside. But there is a problem with this system. No country in the world has the industrial capacity that can match China for the moment.

Ideal Solution:

Every country should eat, use, and consume from what they can produce with their own hands and not enjoying a living standard higher than anyone else. In a more balanced world, the Chinese people will work less, relax more, save more, and consume more. The world will be a better place. (via Harry Yang, Thinker, and Philosopher)
